Woodlands Trust – Free Trees for Schools and Communities

The Woodland Trust is one of the UK’s largest woodland conservation charities, dedicated to protecting, restoring, and expanding native woodlands. For over 50 years, they have worked to inspire people to connect with nature and take action to safeguard the future of our woodlands. Their impact is remarkable, with over 1,000 free public woods under their care and more than 50 million trees planted. With a vision of a world where woods and trees thrive for both people and nature, the charity continues to play a vital role in reforestation efforts across the country.
One of their most current initiatives is the Free Trees for Schools and Communities scheme, which provides hundreds of thousands of free trees to schools and community groups every year. The aim is to ensure that everyone in the UK could plant trees and contribute to a greener future. This initiative is particularly important as the UK strives to reach its 2050 net-zero carbon target, a goal that requires millions of additional trees to be planted to help combat climate change.
Here at Able Canopies, we are committed to sustainability too! We have a tree planting initiative as well. For every canopy order placed, we plant two trees, helping to contribute to a greener, healthier future.
To support these efforts, the Woodland Trust offers a variety of tree packs tailored to different environments and needs. Schools and community groups can apply for tree packs designed for hedgerows, mini woodlands, wildlife habitats, urban areas, and even food-producing woodlands. Each pack contains carefully selected native species which help to support biodiversity and improve local ecosystems. The trees provided are grown and sourced within the UK and Ireland, ensuring they are well-suited to local conditions and contribute to sustainable reforestation.
Applying for a free tree pack is a straightforward process. Schools and community groups simply need to select the type of tree pack that best suits their space, provide a six-digit grid reference for their planting location, and obtain permission from the legal landowner. The Woodland Trust makes two deliveries per year, in March and November, with applications now open for tree packs to be delivered in November 2025. As demand for the scheme is high, applications are expected to close in August, so interested groups are encouraged to apply early.
The Woodland Trust’s work is a shining example of how conservation efforts can make a real difference. By providing free trees, they empower individuals, schools, and communities to take action, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the beauty and benefits of woodlands.
