PTA Fundraising Events – The Legal Requirements
When planning a fundraising event, it’s easy to focus on coordinating volunteers and gathering resources, often overlooking crucial legal and safety considerations such as insurance. While we all hope for a smooth and accident-free event, having the appropriate insurance in place is essential to safeguard against unforeseen incidents.
Here are some key types of insurance to consider for your fundraising event:
Public Liability Insurance
Public liability insurance protects your organisation if someone is injured or property is damaged during your event. This coverage ensures that your association and its members are protected against claims made by attendees or participants.
It’s a common misconception that a school’s insurance policy automatically extends to cover PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) events. However, PTAs operate as separate organisations with charitable status, meaning they are not included in the school’s insurance and could still face legal action.
Insurance for Third Parties
While your public liability insurance provides coverage for your organisation, it does not extend to third-party vendors or contractors. Many PTA events involve hiring external providers, such as entertainers or equipment suppliers (e.g., bouncy castles). These third parties must have their own public liability insurance.
Always request proof of insurance from any third-party contractors and retain a copy for your records. Additionally, check with your local council to ensure the insurance coverage levels meet the requirements for your event. This ensures that all parties are adequately protected and reduces potential risks.
By addressing these insurance requirements, you can help ensure a safe and successful fundraising event for everyone involved.
