Playground Canopies for Schools, Nurseries and Playgroups

Playground Canopies for Schools, Nurseries and Playgroups

Playground canopies can be extremely beneficial to schools, nurseries and playgroups. They can enable children to still enjoy the great outdoors no matter what the weather has planned. If you invest in a high quality canopy such as our school canopies, you will find they block high levels of harmful UV rays, protecting those underneath from the sun, keeping the area underneath cooler and reducing the risk of damage that UV rays can cause.

They also provide a dry area to play and learn outside even if its raining, or if a sudden downpour occurs halfway through play, or outdoor lessons, they won’t be disrupted.

They therefore provide year-round protection that is invaluable when it comes to ensure your outdoor plans go ahead.

They come in many shapes, sizes, colours, and construction materials and have many uses. We’ve therefore put together some answers to the burning questions you may have.

What are playground canopies?

Playground canopies are permanent structures that are installed into the ground and can be freestanding or wall mounted. Their purpose is to provide protection from the weather all year round to pupils and teachers, allowing them to enjoy lessons and playtime outside no matter the weather.

What are playground canopies made from?

Playground canopies can be made from many materials. Our canopies are commercial grade structures that are made from a choice of aluminium which is naturally corrosion resistant, or steel which is galvanised for longevity. Both construction materials, are strong, robust and durable and come with a 25-year life expectancy, making them both a great choice.

We also offer a fantastic range of timber canopies which are extremely popular and are manufactured from glued laminated timber which allows us to create attractive curved beams. This construction material is also a great choice and comes with a 15-year life expectancy.

How big are playground canopies?

Al our commercial canopies are all made to order and are therefore bespoke to your specific needs, including your size requirements. They are therefore available in modest sizes for those that only need to cover small areas, and very large sizes for those that need to cover bigger areas. Two canopies that are perfect for covering larger areas are the Tarnhow Dome Timber Canopy and the Double Grange Freestanding Canopy due to their ability to span large widths and unlimited lengths.

Will a playground canopy fit in with my setting?

Canopies are available in a range of designs including contemporary to traditional appearances. As an example, the Kensington Dual Pitch Freestanding Canopy has a striking, modern design, whereas the Ullswater Apex Freestanding Canopy fits in perfectly with more traditional settings due to its apex roof. There’s sure to be a design that suits your outdoor areas perfectly.

What colour can playground canopies come in?

All our steel and aluminium freestanding canopies are available in any RAL colour, or a range of RAL colours to ensure a perfect match with your existing colour scheme. You can also opt for contrasting colours to add a pop of colour to your outdoor play area.

How long does it take to install a playground canopy?

This depends entirely on the size of your canopy and the structure being installed, some can take a couple of days whereas some can take a week for extra-large structures. You can watch a time-lapse video of a large 12m x 13m freestanding timber canopy being installed at Frome College in Somerset here: Canopy Installation Video

What can playground canopies be used for?

Playground canopies can harbour many uses. While your main application may be for enabling children to play outside in all weathers, they can also be used to take lessons outside in between playtimes. This enables you to plan outdoor lessons without worrying that they will be cancelled due to wet or very hot weather.

You can also make use of them during events. If you hold spring or summer fairs, fundraising events or sports days, your playground canopy would come in very handy, providing a dry area. Again, this ensures your event can still go ahead even if the weather is poor.
