On Ya’ Bike!!
Cycling to school is becoming more and more popular what with the nation now focusing on being ECO friendly and keeping fit, especially from a young age.
Also, if more pupils cycled to school there would be less traffic at the school gates, therefore making your school a safer, friendlier environment for staff and children as well as the local residents.
One way to encourage cycling to school is to install a cycle shelter or cycle compound. This is crucial when promoting cycling to school as parents are not going to buy there much loved children a shiny new bike only for it to get ruined or stolen.
Therefore if a cycle parking facility is installed at your school, then this would make pupils and parents feel more relaxed about bringing bikes to school. Also, providing a parking area can make pupils feel valued and it’s always good to have happy pupils within the classroom!
Here are some key facts to get you thinking:
• Of 40,000 pupils surveyed, 49% would prefer to cycle to school – How many actually cycle to school and why not – is it because there is no cycle parking provided?
• 92% of head teachers surveyed consider cycle parking important in increasing cycling at their school – 92%!!
• 10 bikes can be parked in the space required for one car – So think – 10 bikes = 10 less cars on the road for the sake of losing the space of one car!
• The school run accounts for 21% of rush-hour traffic in term time – That’s more than would think!
• 51% of all car journeys to school are less than one mile – That’s on average a 5 minute bike ride!

Various funding is available to Schools and Nurseries for cycle parking.
Below I have listed only a few websites that offer funding information for cycle parking:
• Department for Transport – Any bids for funding from LSTF must come from the Local Highway Authorities. There schools would have to apply through their Local Highway Authority.
• The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead – Schools developing successful School Travel Plans will be entitled to grant funding from the Department for Education and Skills. This funding can be used to pay for measures such as cycle parking.
• WREN – For funding of between £2,000 and £15,000 with a total project cost of under £50,000. This mainly applies to Pre-Schools and Nurseries.
