Join In The Fun: Empty Classroom Day

Teddy Bears Playgroup Did you know that nearly three-quarters of children spend less than 60 minutes a day outside?

A global campaign, backed by Persil’s Dirt is Good movement, is looking to change that. Their event – Empty Classroom Day is due to take place on Friday 17th June. During that day, it is hoped that teachers will take their students outside for at least one class.

To help support the initiative there are lots of resources, from inspiring lesson plans, posters, and guidance on how to make the day a success in your class. You never know, it might be such a success that you take the class outdoors more often.

The resources page also has helpful hints and tips on how your school can sustain outdoor play and learning throughout the year.

Empty Classroom Day is in its sixth year now and has grown from the initial few schools in London, in 2011, to over 600 in 2015, in 15 countries. Anna Portch created the event with the aid and support of teachers and educators at the London Sustainable Schools Forum. Their aim was to get London students outside to learn in the natural environment and discover its wonders.

And as this is going to be a global campaign, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to connect your school and students, to learn more about other cultures from schools across the world. Who will you talk to? What will your students learn?

Research has consistently demonstrated that outdoor play and learning can help stimulate the mind. Your children can learn better social skills and enhance problem-solving skills as well as exercise.
