Pharmacies and chemists are vital services in every community across the country and during the cold and flu season, they can get extremely busy. With social distancing measures currently in place, it can be tricky keeping all customers spaced apart whilst they que for their prescriptions and purchases.

Earlier this year I remember seeing the long ques outside the chemists’ as customers would wait to collect their prescriptions, not to mention the discussions on social media of how they didn’t want to que in the rain.

Whilst social distancing measures are still in place, queuing outside to collect prescriptions during busy periods is almost inevitable. So, although you can’t bring your customers inside without breaking social distancing rules, you can created a dry sheltered area that they can wait underneath outside.

Adding a waiting shelter along the entrance of your premises or along the side, provides a dry, sheltered space for you customers to wait whilst the capacity within the pharmacy is full. If you choose to add front and side fills, you will add additional weather protection, almost completely enclosing the shelter whilst still enabling everyone to keep a distance, resulting in grateful customers.

You can also add heaters and lights to the canopies for added warmth and to make your customers feel safer in a well-lit area, perfect for those dark winter early evenings.

If your chemist front is on a public path, a canopy with front posts may not be an ideal option and lengthy planning permission procedures may be required. As an alternative, you can opt for a wall mounted cantilevered canopy that has no front posts. The Abberton Walkway Canopy and the Tenby Entrance Canopy are great examples and will provide the weather protection required and depending on your local authority, will not require planning permission.
