Bottoms Up! – Host your own wine tasting and boost your school fundraising
Fundraising can take many forms—social events, concerts, raffles—and for schools, the search for new ideas to keep the message fresh and to attract as many new faces as possible is ongoing.
One activity to consider is hosting your own wine-tasting evening. The world of wine can be impenetrable for many people. How many of us can tell a pinot noir from a pinot grigio? An informal, but informative, explanation of the grapes, wine-making techniques and wine-growing regions of the world can take away a lot of the mystery. And be a lot of fun. Sampling a few glasses along the way is no bad thing either!
An experienced practitioner in this field is Martin Higginson, whose company, Suffolk Wine Academy, have run several fund-raisers for local schools. Martin explains that the price charged per ticket to attend the event can generate a healthy return for very little additional outlay for the school itself. Evenings can also be themed to suit the preferences of the audience or to fit in with other school activities. He recognises the need for the event to raise as much as possible and amends his own costs accordingly. As the events would be for adults only they also bring something different to the school’s fundraising programme. Wine tasting can become a regular event, as different countries or grape varieties are explained and sampled, which increases the longer-term fund raising value of this activity.
The key, of course, is finding a wine expert who can guide the audience through the different terms and tastes and keep the atmosphere fun but educational. Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) qualified experts, like Martin, can be found in your area. Or why not partner up with your local wine merchant, who might also welcome the chance to show off their knowledge and help their local school?
Whatever way you decide to go, a wine tasting event can add something special to your fundraising programme. Remember, life is too short to drink bad wine. Cheers.
