Awnings for Care Homes – The Benefits

A much needed facility that may be overlooked within care homes is an outside shelter structure to provide shelter to their residents when enjoying the outside. Creating an accessible, comfortable and relaxing outside area for residents is important as the outside can offer a lot to those that can no longer pop here and there as and when desired. A relaxing outside area can give elderly and less able residents freedom. Whether it is giving them a hobby such taking care of plants outside or whether they are able to quite simply just sit outside and enjoy the fresh air and the sound of birds singing.

It is therefore important to make sure you include a sun shade structure in your communal garden design as residents need protection from the sun whilst enjoying the outdoors. Awnings are the perfect solution for this, they provide high protection from the sun’s UV rays, protecting those underneath from the risk of sunburn and heat stroke.

Sun awnings can provide a cool & shaded area when it is too hot outside and too stuffy inside. If installed in front of a window, an awning can also block the sun’s rays from shining inside the building, therefore decreasing the heat inside which can be appreciated at the height of summer. Sun cover is important for care home residents as their skin and eyes can be very sensitive to the sun and instead of keeping them indoors you will be able to allow them to enjoy the outdoors with everyone else without jeopardising their health.

As an added extra, if you do not have a large outside area or do not want a permanent structure then an awning would be the ideal care home canopy as it can be opened and closed when needed by the push of a button. If you would prefer to operate your awning manually with a hand rank then this can also be installed. Awnings are also a cost effective alternative to a wall mounted or free standing canopy and is suited to smaller budgets.
