5 Schools with Great Outdoor Play & Learning Areas

The great outdoors gives children an exciting new environment to explore outside the classroom, encouraging them to be active and also giving them a chance to connect with nature and their environment. Keeping this outdoor area vibrant and full of resources is a great way to encourage children outdoors to take advantage of the many benefits it brings.

Over the years we have installed many canopies (thousands in-fact; click here to see our impressive installations map) at schools as part of their redevelopment of their playgrounds and outdoor areas! Many teachers or Early Years practitioners come to us because they wish to provide an outdoor area which can be used whatever the weather, allowing them to plan outdoor activities without worrying about whether there will be a heavy downpour, or giving teachers a cooler place to teach conventional lessons on hot sunny days.

We really enjoy helping schools, nurseries and other educational facilities create fabulous outdoor areas that really do have the “wow” factor. Here are just some of the schools we have worked with to help them create outdoor areas which can be used all year round.

1. Park Community Primary School, Wrexham, Clwyd
This primary school in Wrexham created a fantastic outdoor area as part of their new extension. We installed 4 Tarnhow timber canopies outside the Early Years classrooms to provide cover when the children needed it, each canopy was given different colour post pads to add extra colour to the area. They also incorporated lots of outdoor play equipment and fixed sandpits. The areas were also fenced off to create a safer environment for the children.

2. Capel Manor Primary School, Enfield, Middlesex
This is very recent installation of ours, we installed an impressive 30.55m x 3.5m solar canopy. This allows the canopy not only to provide protection from the elements and shade the windows of the classrooms to keep them cool, it also creates free energy, saving the school money and helping to save the environment too! And as this canopy is very long, lots of outdoor play equipment can be stored underneath – perfect!

3. Buckingham Junior School, Buckingham, Buckinghamshire
We have installed 4 canopies at this school and two of them are beautifully bright Ullswater Apex Free Standing Canopies (as shown to the right). The staff as Buckingham Junior School really have made the most of their outdoor area with 4 canopies and lots of fantastic outdoor play & learning equipment kept underneath. I can’t see their pupils can get bored at break times!

4. Little Paxton Pre-School, Little Paxton, Cambridgeshire
Little Paxton Pre-School had a Coniston wall mounted canopy installed in their existing outdoor area. I love this play area because they have used lots of bright colours within the canopy post pads, the fencing and the soft play flooring. They have incorporated some fantastic playing equipment into the area too and having this covered means children can play here even in the heavy rain.

5. Houldsworth Valley Primary School, Newmarket, Suffolk
I think Houldsworth Valley Primary School have done a terrific job by creating this wonderful outdoor learning area that can be enjoyed all year round. They have taken the classroom outside with lots of learning equipment and tables and chairs which can be accessed even in heavy downpours with the help of a Devoke Free Standing Canopy finished in Flame Red (RAL 3000).
