In March 2025, we supplied and installed a 16.5m x 9m Bespoke Coniston Freestanding Canopy with 12 Side Fills at St Benedict’s Catholic College in Colchester, Essex.

St Benedict’s Catholic College approached Able Canopies seeking a durable, all-weather outdoor space for their students and staff. Their goal was to create a comfortable and inviting area suitable for both outdoor lessons and break times, promoting greater use of their outdoor facilities throughout the year.

Following an evaluation of the school’s requirements, we recommended installing two Coniston Freestanding Canopies positioned back-to-back. This created a spacious covered area measuring 16.5m x 9m, providing an impressive total coverage of 148.5 square metres. Additionally, we installed a 5m x 3m Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy, seamlessly connecting the main building to the new sheltered area, ensuring effective weather protection for students and staff accessing the outdoor space.

To enhance weather protection further, we included 12 side fills designed to shield the area, especially on windy days. Working alongside Lonsdale Landscapes Ltd, we also installed 270 square metres of artificial grass, transforming the area into an attractive, practical, and welcoming outdoor environment suitable for year-round use.

This tailored solution successfully fulfilled the college’s vision, providing students and staff with a versatile and protected outdoor space that can be comfortably enjoyed in all weather conditions.

These canopy installations were part of a major Building Schools for Future (BSF) project managed by Bouygues (UK) Ltd. to refurbish parts of the school and construct a new building at the site.
