The Brief

Roughlee C of E Primary School is a small school located in rural Lancashire which offers education to 49 pupils ages 4-11 years old. At the time of enquiry, the school didn’t have any cover from the weather within their outside area. They therefore got in touch with us, looking to cover a large space within their playground so their pupils could play and learn outside all year round.

The Solution

The staff at the school browsed our range of school canopies, and loved the look of our Tarnhow Dome Freestanding Timber Canopy. This was a great choice for them as it can cover large areas and as the school is in a beautiful rural setting in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a timber canopy would look most at home.

Following a free site survey, we supplied a quotation for a 12m x 9m Tarnhow Dome Freestanding Timber Canopy, to be situated at the far end of their playground.

They were pleased with the canopy and the service provided and therefore placed an order for the canopy. However, because the school is set in an AONB, they required planning permission from their local authority. This is not a problem as we provide a free canopy planning help service where we can take care of the time-consuming paperwork for you.

The school is also situated by the beautiful White Hough Water, which is a tributary of Pendle Water, a minor river in Lancashire. This meant a Flood Risk Assessment was required to accompany the planning application. Again, this is something we can take care of as part of our free planning help service and therefore did for Roughlee C of E Primary School.

The Installation

In the lead up to the installation, a car unfortunately collided with the bridge wall that goes over the river. The wall therefore needed urgent repair works which included repairing the bridge itself too. Luckily the works were completed in time before the canopy installation was due to take place with the road reopened and access regained.

However, access to the site was still tricky for a number of reasons:

  1. The school is in a small rural village and the road was therefore tight, we therefore had nowhere to unload the large timber beams besides the area we were to install the canopy.
  2. The perimeter of the school is surrounded by steel mesh fencing and the access within the fencing was not large enough for the timber beams.

With these two factors in place. Our only option was to unload the canopy components straight off the truck, over the fence into the working area. Although this wasn’t the usual procedure, it was possible and it was achieved with no issues and minimal disruption to road users.

Despite the slight obstructions, the installation went ahead as scheduled within the 8 days as planned with no problems along the way, leaving the school very happy with the end result.

When asked how he felt about the product and service provided, Mark Elliot, the Headteacher said:

“The installation was excellent. Everything was completed by very skilled and considerate workmen on time. I am very impressed by both the quality of the product and the installation. I would certainly recommend and use Able Canopies again. Superb from start to finish.”
