The Brief
Nishkam School is a primary and secondary school in West London that is a haven of optimism, focus, and tranquillity, where students achieve academic excellence while also growing into compassionate and respectful individuals. It is run by the Nishkam School trust which runs a number of schools across the country and in Kenya.
Back in 2021, we supplied and installed a Tarnhow Curved Freestanding Timber Canopy at their primary school in Birmingham. They therefore got back in touch with us as their west London school required another set of canopies to provide weather protection over their outdoor dining, play and teaching areas.
The Solution
We booked them in for a free site survey so we could assess the areas that required shade and shelter. During the survey, it was established that two different canopies would be perfect for the project. This included:
- The Ulverston Umbrella to cover the outdoor dining area. Commercial umbrella canopies look great above picnic benches and the Ulverston is covered with waterproof tensile fabric which means it protects from both the sun and rain, making it perfect for all-year-round use. It was agreed that three Ulverston Umbrellas would cover the area required perfectly.
- The Tarnhow Curved Freestanding Timber Canopy to cover the sheltered play and teaching areas. Again, this was a great choice as the large projection ensures they would cover areas big enough to teach under, whilst keeping protected from the elements. The natural timber aesthetic also looks perfect in modern settings such as adjacent to Nishkam schools’ sleek, modern buildings.
The Installation
The canopies were installed over two phases with the three Ulverston Umbrellas and the 34.88m x 7m and 3.7m x 7m Tarnhow Curved Freestanding Canopies completing phase one. The two timber canopies were installed together to create a larger canopy that wraps around the corner of the building, enabling the school to utilise as much of their outdoor space as possible.
The second phased consisted of the final two Tarnhow Curved Timber Canopies which were 7.2m x 8.6m and 9m x 5m. Both phases went ahead as scheduled with no issues along the way.
