Brief
John Henry Newman Catholic College in Birmingham is a secondary school with a sixth form college that caters for 1306 pupils aged between 11 to 18. This school belongs to Our Lady and All Saints Multi-Academy Trust. This school is part of Our Lady and All Saints Multi Academy Trust, of which there are 14 schools across Solihull, Birmingham and Warwickshire. The college contacted us to arrange a survey and discuss what shelter and canopy options we could offer as they were seeking a durable and cost-effective canopy to withstand the demands of a busy secondary school environment.
The college sought to enhance their outdoor dining facilities, recognising the need for more weather-protected spaces, where students could comfortably dine and socialise while staying shielded from the elements. Their goal was to find a freestanding outdoor dining canopy that would provide both functionality and durability.
To address their needs, we conducted an initial survey to ensure we could deliver a tailored and effective solution.

Proposal
During the survey, our surveyor suggested the area would be perfect for our Stepped Coniston Canopy. This would enable the college to cover a large area and would be more suited to the college’s budget. This canopy can be installed quickly and with minimal disruption. The client liked this idea and requested a quotation.
A quotation was sent to the college, proposing an area coverage of 22m x 10m, a total of 220 sqm of covered space. This versatile and spacious design can provide protection for a variety of uses while also providing ample protection for the pupils.
The college was keen about the idea of a Stepped Coniston Canopy installation, offering such a vast, versatile space to meet their needs.
Installation
In December, the school confirmed their order for the Stepped Coniston Freestanding Canopy, and we scheduled the installation for late February 2022. The project was successfully completed by early March 2022 at John Henry Newman Catholic College.
With the installation complete, the college now benefits from a spacious, weather-protected outdoor dining and socialising area that can be used year-round, regardless of the weather. The canopies ensure that students are shielded from the elements, allowing them to enjoy the outdoors comfortably—a feature that offers numerous benefits for their well-being.
Both the college and the trust were delighted with the outcome of their new canopies for their functionality and impact on the school environment.
